8 BENEFICIAL REASONS FOR USING WOOD CHIPS IN YOUR GARDEN
The usefulness : why do we apply wood chips?
1 – To regulate the temperature of the soil around the roots of the plants
2 – To prolong the effect of rain / watering by retaining moisture
3 – It reduces weed growth
4 – To feed the soil as the chips decompose
5 – Wood Chips will prevent mud from splashing on walls when watering pots and flowerbeds
6 – It will create and habitat for beneficial organisms, such as fungi, bacteria, earthworms
7 – Wood Chips do not tie up nitrogen, if not mixed into soil – in fact it will release nitrogen during the decomposition process, which will benefit the plants.
8 – Last but not least, it is visually attractive!
It is absolutely perfect for pots, flowerbeds, around trees and on Footpaths.
THE METHOD : HOW TO USE WOOD CHIPS?
HOW TO APPLY:
Spread a layer of around 15 cm, on top of the soil.
Do not mix into the soil.
If applied around a tree, keep a small radius of around 15 cm free around the trunk, as excess moisture could damage the bark.
N.B: tree roots spread as far as the leaf circumference, so ideally the woodchips should be applied to that same circumference.
WHEN TO APPLY:
Ideally in early september, before the hot season (in Mauritius).
The beneficial effects should last about 4 months, so a new layer should be added in january, to cover the hot and rainy months.
